Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems faced by students in learning English, especially in learning to read. The problems are some of students had difficulties in comprehending the text, some of students had difficulties in identifying the main idea of the text,some of students had difficulties in identifying the generic structure of the text, and the strategy of teaching reading comprehension was not appropriate. Based on those factors, the writer was interested in investigating about teaching reading comprehension. Thus, the writer conducted the research entitled the effect of using that was then- this is now strategy on reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text of the second year students at Islamic senior high school Kuok The purposes were to find out the students’ reading comprehension ofhortatory exposition text taught by using that was then-this is now strategy and taught without using that was then-this is now strategy, and to find out the significant effecton students’ reading comprehension ofhortatoryexposition text taught by using that was then-this is now strategy. The design of this research was a quasi experimental research by using pre-test and post-test. The subject of this research was the second year students at Islamic Senior High School Kuok, and the object was the effect of using that was then- this is now strategy on reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text. The population was the second year students. Total number of population was 215students, and the writer used 60 studentsas sample. In collecting the data, the writer used test in form of multiple choice. In analyzing the data, the writer used independent sample t test by using SPSS 17.0 software. Finally, based on the data analysis, it was found that 2.01≤6.270≥2.68.So, the tobtained was higher than ttable. In other words, Ha wasacceptedand Ho was rejected. It means that there was a significant effect of using that was then-this is now strategy on students’ reading comprehension of hortatory exposition text at the second year of Islamic senior high school Kuok.
