Abstract
Based on the researcher’s preliminary study, it was found that some of the tenth grade students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru had problems in speaking ability. The problems were seen in their inability to achieve the passing grade. The main focus of this research was to find out speaking ability and component of speaking ability was the most difficult for the Tenth Grade Students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru.The researcher formulated the problems into two research questions that would be answered by using quantitative research, they were; a) How was speaking ability of the Tenth Grade Students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru? b) What component of speaking ability was the most difficult for the Tenth Grade Students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru? this research had one variable that was speaking ability as a dependent variable. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru. The researcher used simple random sampling to take the sample. The researcher took 4 students from each class. So, the sample of this research was 28 students. There were 28 students as sample from 280 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used oral presentation as the test and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researcher used descriptive statistics. Based on the result of analysis, The students’ speaking ability of the Tenth Grade Students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru was categorized into “less level”. The most difficult component of speaking ability for the Tenth Grade Students at Vocational High School Muhammadiyah 3 Terpadu Pekanbaru was fluency with the mean score 10.50 and 89 answers of no (13%).
