Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary research, it was found that some of the eleventh grade students of Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru had problems in listening comprehension. The problems are seen in their inability to achieve the passing grade. The specific objective of this research was to find out whether there is or no significant correlation between students’ motivation in listening to English songs and their listening comprehension at the eleventh grade of Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. This research had two variables, students’ motivation in listening to English songs as an independent variable and students’ listening comprehension as a dependent variable. This research was a correlational research. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade of Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students which consisted of 12 classes. The total population of this research was 378 students. Because the population was too large, so the writer used simple random sampling technique to take the sample. Thus, the writer took 38 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire to measure students’ motivation in listening to English songs and test to measure the students’ listening comprehension. The writer analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS Version 24.0. Based on the result, it was found that the mean score of students’ motivation in listening to English songs was 62.21 (high level), while their listening comprehension was 64.87 (sufficient level). In terms of the correlation between students’ motivation in listening to English songs and their listening comprehension, the writer found that the sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.000 < 0.05. Thus, the writer concluded that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the writer found that the value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.683 which indicated that there was a strong positive correlation between the two variables. Based on the writer findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation in listening to English songs and their listening comprehension at the eleventh grade of Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. Key words: Correlation, Motivation, Songs, Listening Comprehension.
