Abstract

Based on the preliminary research, it was found that some of the eleventhgrade students at MAN 1 Pekanbaru had problems in understanding reading text. The problems were seen in their inability to achieve the passing grade. The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was a significant contribution of students reading habit toward their understanding in reading explanation text of the eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. This research consists of two variables; students reading habit as an independent variable and students’ understanding in reading explanation text as a dependent variable. This research was a correlational research, which the subject of this research was the eleventh-grade students at MAN 1 Pekanbaru. The population of this research covers 372 students. Because the number of population is too large, the researcher represented 20% of the population as sample. In this case, the researcher used simple random sampling technique. It is 74 students. In collecting data, the researcher used questionnaire and test. The questionnaire was used to obtain the students’ reading habit and test was used to find out the students’ understanding in reading explanation text. The data collected were analyzed with linear regression techniques with the least square method and product moment. From the data analysis, which has been analyzed by using SPSS of windows version 16 programs, the sig. value is 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000 < 0.05. So that the researcher can conclude that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that there is a significant contribution of students’ reading habit toward their understanding in reading explanation text of the eleventh grade students’ at MAN 1 Pekanbaru.
