Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant correlation between personality traits and English achievement, and which personality traits of the students is the most correlated with English achievement at State Islamic Junior High School 8 Kampar based on Big Five Personality theory. After doing the observation at the school, the writer found and identified some problems, included: some of the students were not active in class had high of achievement, some of the students were active in class had low of achievement, some of the students were not interested with teacher’s explanation and some-while talk with her/his friend, while few of the students pretended to do other subject in learning English. The type of this research was a correlational research design. The writer was used questionnaire that was adopted from Big Five Inventory to determine the personality traits and was used documentation of students’ score made by English teacher at the school to determine the English achievement. The total population of this research was 70 students from 3 classes. Due to the number of population which was less than 100 students, the writer took all the population as the sample of this research. In analyzing the data, the writer used Pearson Product Moment Correlation, the result of the analysis of this research was 0.412 higher than rtable at level 5 % (0.235) and at level 1% (0.306). It means that Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. In other words, there was significant correlation between students’ personality traits and their students’ English achievement at State Islamic Junior high school 8 Kampar.
