Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know whether there is a correlation between students’ writing motivation and their writing ability at the eighth grade of State Islamic Junior High School 3 Pekanbaru. From 328 students of the total population which consisted of nine classes, the researcher took 49 students as the sample by using simple random sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher distributed questionnaire to the respondents to assess their writing motivation. The questionnaire was based on the indicators of writing motivation which were adopted from Academic Writing Motivation Questinare (AMWQ) by Payne and translated into Indonesian language. Besides, in assessing students’ writing ability, this research conducted a written test to the students. In analyzing the data, the questionnaire was assessed by Likert’s scale rating, and written test was measured by ESL Composition profile. Pearson Product Moment Correlation Technique was used in order to measure the correlation between the two variables which quantified the strength as well as direction of the correlation by using SPSS.19. The result of this research showed that the students’ writing motivation was 66.92% while their writing ability was 69.95. In terms of the correlation between students’ writing motivation and their writing ability, the researcher found that the coefficient correlation in this research was 0.483; it means that there is an average correlation between those variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students’ writing motivation and their writing ability at the eighth grade of State Islamic Junior High School 3 Pekanbaru.
