Abstract
Based on writer’s preliminary study, it found that the students faced difficulty dealing with pronunciation especially in some vowel, diphthong, and consonant and ending ed sound. For example, the students missing ending ed sound that was familiar for them such as in the word fashioned,it should be pronounced as /’fæʃnd/ but they pronounced that word as /’fæʃnıd/ and /’fæʃn/. So, the writer was interested in conducting a research related to this issue.The method used was descriptive qualitative which described students’ English Segmental Pronunciation in this school. The objectives wereto find out what the pronunciation problems that faced by the students andhow the segmental features of English sounds containing consonants, vowels and dipthong mispronounced by the students at the third year of SMAN 8 Pekanbaru.This research was administrated at SMAN 8 Pekanbaru. The sample was twelve students at the third grade. The writer used purposive sampling in selecting the sample. The participants were given a list of words that contained 20 words that contain all of aspects of pronunciation including segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation and interviewed the students to collect the data. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by using the formula of percentage. The data that had been collected was transcribing in phonetic transcription and then was categorized into several categories. Finally, the result of analysis showed that there were three types of errors such as shortening, substituting, and omitting. For shortening, it had 10%, 15% is for omitting and 75 % is for substituting. Keywords: Analysis, Pronunciation, Segmental, Vowel, Consonant
