Abstract

The main focus of this research was to find out whether there was a significant correlation between English grammar competence and speaking skill of the eleventh grade students at senior high school 1 Teluk Kuantan. The writer formulated the problems into two research questions that would be answered by using quantitative research, that is; 1) Is there any correlation between students’ grammar competence and their speaking skill of the eleventh grade students at Senior High School 1 Teluk Kuantan? and 2)Which component of speaking skill is the most correlated to students’ English grammar competence? This research had two variables, grammar competence as an independent variable and students’ speaking skill as a dependent variable. This research was a correlational study. The subject of this research was the eleventh-grade students at Senior High School 1 Teluk Kuantan. The writer selected 30 students of a class from total nine classes by using cluster random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the writer used multiple choice test and speaking test. The technique of analyzing data was Pearson Product Moment and it was eased by using SPSS 23.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a correlation between English grammar competence and speaking skill of the eleventh grade students at senior high school 1 Teluk Kuantan. It was considered from sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 that was longer than α (0.05). It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. From the research findings, it showed that there was a correlation between English grammar competence and speaking skill of the eleventh grade students at senior high school 1 Teluk Kuantan.
