Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students could not speak in English well. This problem was caused by some factors. Some of students had lack of vocabulary, and also lack of confidence, therefore they were confused to speak in English. They were also difficult to use good grammatical order, and could not speak with the proper word so the information that they want to tell becomes not clear to the audience. However, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The writer conducted a research at State Senior High School 1 Tembilahan. The subject was the first grade students of State Senior High School 1 Tembilahan and the object of this research was the effect of using Story Completion Technique on students’ speaking ability. The design of this research was a Quasi-Experimental Research. The Population of this research was all of the first grade students. The total number of population was 294 students. The writer used cluster sampling technique by taking only two classes as sample; X IPS 1 consisted of 23 students as an experimental class and X IPS 2 consisted of 23 students as control class. Finally, the number of the samples from two classes was 46 students. To analyze the data, the writer used independent sample t-test and dependent sample t-test formula by using software SPSS 16. In order to find out whether or not there was significant effect of using Story Completion technique on students’ speaking ability, the writer provided the effect size or (Eta Squared). Based on the result, it was found that, the result of eta squared was 0.10 that was categorized into medium effect. It means null hypothesis (H04) is rejected while null hypothesis (Ha4) is accepted. In conclusion, there was significant effect of using Story Completion technique on students’ speaking ability at the first grade of State Senior High School 1 Tembilahan.
