Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out whether there is a correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and their reading comprehension of recount text at the first grade of Islamic Senior High School Model 2 Pekanbaru or not. The sample of this research was 30 students which were taken by using simple random sampling technique. The method used in this research was a quantitative method and the design used in this research was a correlational design. The researcher assessed the level of students’ metacognitive awareness by using questionnaires which consisted of 25 statements. The questionnaires were based on the indicators of metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI) by Schraw, G.& Dennison, R.S. (1994). Meanwhile, the researcher assessed students’ reading comprehensioin by conducting multiple choice test which was created based on the indicators of reading comprehension, consisted of 25 questions. Then, in analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coeficient through SPSS 17.00 Version. The result of this research showed that sig. (2-tailed) value = 0.036 which is smaller than Pα =0.05. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of correlation coeficient (r) is 0.385). In conclusion, there is a significant positive correlation between students’ metacognitive awareness and reading comprehension of recount text, that the higher metacognitive awareness of the students is, the higher the students’ reading comprehension will be.
