Abstract

This paper entitles: “The Students’ Ability in Differentiate Kinds of Text (Genre) in Reading Comprehension at First Year Students of SMAN 03 Bangkinang”. The purpose of reading is not only gain information or verifies existing knowledge, but also to know kinds of text and select it. There are some varieties of text, and it is called genre. Each of them has different forms in structures and components. In learning process, most of the students have problems. It can be seen in phenomena, as follows: 1) The students still confuse with Genre (kinds of texts) presented by their English teacher 2) The students are still poor in vocabularies 3) The students are not able catch the meaning of the text 4) Some students are not able to answer the questions based on reading English text 5) Some students do not comprehend kinds of text and are not able to differentiate it. The formulations of the problem are: 1) How is the ability of the first year students in differentiating kinds of text? 2) Which kind of texts is easy or difficult for students to comprehend? The subject of the research is the first year students of SMAN 03 Bangkinang in year 2008/2009, with the populations 261 students in 7 classes. The sample took by random sampling which consists of 36 students as the sample. The writer used a test as instrument. The test was used to obtain the students’ ability to differentiate kinds of text (Genres) in reading comprehension and identify which kinds of text is easy or difficult for them in comprehending the texts. The question consists of 30 items and should be completed within 60 minutes. To analyzed the percentage o the students’ score by using formula: X P = ��� x 100% N The result of the research found that the students’ ability to differentiate kinds of text (Genres) in reading comprehension falls into Good (60.5). Then, the easiest category is Descriptive text (22 %). And, the difficult category is News item (54 %) and Narrative (41 %).
