Abstract

This research was conducted because some problems were faced by students in learning English especially in reading. The problems were; some of the students cannot identify the main idea from the text given by teacher, some of the students are not able to interpret the authors’ aim, some of the students are not able to find the meaning of unfamiliar words in the reading text and some of the students cannot obtain factual information from the reading text. The objectives of this research were to find out students’ reading comprehension by using conventional strategy, to find out students’ reading comprehension by using Save the Last Word for Me (SLWM) strategy, and to obtain the significant effect of using Save the Last Word for Me (SLWM) strategy toward students’ reading comprehension. The design used in this research was quasi experimental research that was non-equivalent control group design. In collecting data, the writer used test, it was used in order to collect the data of students’ reading comprehension. The tests consisted of two tests: Pretest was used to determine student’s reading comprehension before getting the treatment and Posttest was used to determine student’s comprehension after getting the treatment. By the gathering data pre-test and post-test from both treatment and control groups, the effect of treatment was analized with Independent T-test Formula. From the research findings, the score of t 0 was higher than t table . Therefore, h o was rejected and ha was accepted. It means that there was significant effect of using SLWM strategy toward students’ reading comprehension. It can be concluded that students’ reading comprehension taught by using SLWM strategy was better than students’ reading comprehension taught by using conventional strategy.
