Abstract
The purpose of this study were to identify students’ motivation and students’ writing ability in descriptive text at tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Kampar. This research is correlational research. The population of this research was the tenth grade students which consisted of 9 classes. The total population of this research was 300 students. Because the population was too large, so the reasearcher used simple random sampling technique to take the sample. Thus, the researcher took 90 students as the sample of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire to measure students’ motivation and writing test to measure the students’ writing ability. The researcher analyzed the data by using Pearson Product Moment formula of SPSS Version 20.0. Based on the results, it was found that the mean score of students’ motivation was 73.90 (good level), while their writing ability was 69.37 (sufficient level). In terms of the correlation between students’ motivation and their writing ability, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = 0.029 < 0.005. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of correlation coefficient (r) was 0.231 which indicated that there was correlation between the two variables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a significant correlation between students’ motivation and their writing ability at tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 Kampar.
