Abstract

The 2013 curriculum stated that the students must be able to produce oral and written text fluently and accurately. Logically, the students are able to speak fluently and accurately and the goal of teaching should be achieved but it is contradictory with the real situation. those are because some affective factors such as motivation, inhibition, self-esteem and anxiety. And anxiety is one of the prominent factors which are influenced foreign language learning. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out the correlation between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking fluency in at tenth grad of State Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru. This research is a correlational research, which the researcher distributed questionnaires to the respondent to assess students’ speaking anxiety. Besides, in assessing students’ speaking fluency, the researcher conducted oral test to the students and the score was evaluated by two raters. The population of the research was 396 students. Then, in choosing the sample the researcher used simple random sampling and took 30 students. The researcher used Pearson product moment correlation coefficient through SPSS 22.00 to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that sig. (2-tailed) value is 0.001. It can be stated that 0.000<0.05. It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) is -0.700. In conclusion, there is a significant negative correlation between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking fluency. Key words: Correlation, Speaking Anxiety, Speaking Fluency
