Abstract

This research has 3 formulations of the problems that how students prior knowledge is, how students’ ability in writing expository paragraphs is, and whether there is any significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs at the second year of SMK IBNU TAIMIYAH Pekanbaru. The objective of the research are to find out students’ prior knowledge, and to find out the students’ ability in writing expository paragraphs, and to find out whether there is significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs at the second year of SMK IBNU TAIMIYAH Pekanbaru. In this research, the type of research was correlation research. The writer used one class as sample that consists of 32 students. The technique of data collection was the test. The test was used in order to find out the students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs at the second year of SMK IBNU TAIMIYAH Pekanbaru. The technique of data analysis used Simple Regression in order to find out the amount correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs by using SPSS 16 Version. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that the score of R square is 0.520, it means that the correlation of students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs is 52.0%. Whereas the 48.0% from 100% is influenced by the other variable. The coefficient correlation was 0.721, categorized into high correlation. The conclusion is that there was significant correlation between students’ prior knowledge and their ability in writing expository paragraphs at the second year of SMK IBNU TAIMIYAH Pekanbaru.
