Abstract
This study aims to explore the language of instruction used by the English teacher in teaching English at Junior High School 34 in Pekanbaru, focusing on the use of Indonesia Languagein the classroom. The research seeks to investigate how the use of Indonesia Languagealongside English in language instruction impacts students' English language development and what factors influence English teachers' decisions to switch between the two languages during English lessons. The research employed classroom observation and in-depth interviews with the teacher and students to gather data. The results show that the teacher applied four main aspects in using language during teaching: language instruction methods, classroom environment, teacher–student interaction, and code-switching practices. The findings revealed that Indonesia Languagewas often used to clarify explanations, manage classroom interaction, and support student understanding, while English was used for language exposure and practice. The study concludes that combining both languages effectively helps create a supportive learning atmosphere and improves students’ comprehension and participation in English learning.
