Abstract
This research aimed at identifying the learning strategies implemented by students classified as successful English language learners and the reasons for their use. This research focused on two main questions: 1. “what learning strategies were used by successful English language learners at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru?”, and 2. “why did successful English language learners at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru use these strategies?”. Qualitative approach was used in this research with a case study design. Participants were the eleventh and twelfth grade students at State Islamic Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru selected with purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interview with students and English teachers. The data obtained were analyzed with thematic analysis to identify key patterns and themes related to the use of learning strategies. The research findings showed that successful students in English language learning used a combination of direct and indirect learning strategies. Direct strategies included memory, cognitive, and compensatory strategies, while indirect strategies included metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. Students utilized digital media, engaged in independent practice, engaged in self-reflection, managed emotions, and built interactions with teachers and peers. The selection and implementation of these strategies were influenced with metacognitive awareness, prior learning experiences, motivation levels, and a supportive learning environment. Overall, it could be concluded that student success in learning English was determined not only with language ability, but also with their ability to select and apply learning strategies appropriately, consistently, and in accordance with their learning needs.
