Abstract

Speaking is one of the key skills in English learning that students must master. However, many students struggle to express their ideas verbally, primarily due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and a lack of engaging speaking practice. To address this, the use of artificial intelligence-based technology like ChatGPT can be a solution. ChatGPT provides an interactive, flexible, and accessible learning environment. This study aims to obtain empirical data and analyze the effect of using ChatGPT on students' speaking ability. The study was conducted on first grade students at SMK Migas Inovasi Riau using a quasi-experimental method involving two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling with a sample size of 21 students. Data collection was carried out through pre-test and post-test in the form of speaking ability assessment. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test through the SPSS version 25 program. Based on the test results, the Asymp. Sig. value was obtained at 0.000, which means it is less than 0.05. Thus, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted. This means that there is a significant influence of the use of ChatGPT on students' speaking ability. Furthermore, the average rank in the experimental class, 15.25, was significantly higher than the control class's 5.75. This indicates that students who used ChatGPT had better speaking skills than those who did not.
