Abstract
This study aimed to explore the teaching of English pronunciation to future English teachers at a university in Pekanbaru and the factors that influenced it. The research focused on two main questions: 1. how is the teaching of English pronunciation to Future English teachers, and 2. What are the factors influencing the teaching of English Pronunciation to Future English teachers? This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing a case study method. Data were collected through interviews with two lecturers who taught pronunciation courses, focus group discussions with two groups of students, and analysis of learning documents. The data were analyzed thematically, based on direct quotes from lecturers and students, and then categorized according to the study’s focus. The results showed that English pronunciation teaching was carried out through three main strategies: (1) structured curriculum-based planning, (2) improving understanding and skills through the introduction of sound aspects, integration of theory and practice, collaboration, and diverse exercises, and (3) strengthening pronunciation skills through direct practice, reflective evaluation, and audio-visual-based independent practice. Additionally, this study found that both internal and external factors influenced the success of pronunciation learning. Internal factors included the readiness of lecturers and students, motivation, and student confidence. Meanwhile, external factors included the availability of supporting facilities, a conducive learning environment, and limited resources, which remained an obstacle. Overall, this study concluded that the success of pronunciation teaching depends on not only on the learning design and teaching strategies of lecturers, but also on the readiness, motivation, and active participation of students. Adequate facilities and a conducive learning environment were also very important to support learning effectiveness.
