Abstract

This qualitative case study explores student participation in Englishlanguage learningclassroomat SMAN 2 Tanah Putih, Indonesia. Despite its importance for developing communication skills, participation remains low due to factorssuch as local language habits.Through questionnaires from 100 students and interviews with six students, this study identifies key influencing factors.The findings reveal that student participation was moderate to low, with challenges in vocabulary, grammar,pronunciation, and fluency contributing to low confidence and reluctance to speak.Despite teachers' motivational efforts, student anxieties and skill gaps persist, further complicated by reliance on translation.However, students still express a strong desire to participate if given adequate support, challenging the assumption that low confidence leads to disengagement. Classroom dynamics also play a role, as active students sometimes feel marginalized by peers.The study also highlights the lack of extracurricular opportunities, such as English competitions, as a barrier to language practice outside the classroom. These findings align with the need for targeted interventions to foster an engaging and supportive learning environment,emphasizing the role of structured support systems in enhancing student participation.
