Abstract
The ability of teacher talk in delivers the messages during the teaching and learning process can determine students understanding on the lesson. Based on preliminary observation on June, 2024, at SMPN 1 Bandar Petalangan, it was found that the teacher has implemented teacher talk. This study aims to identify the types of teacher talk that foster student engagement during the English learning process and explore how teacher talk involves students in the learning process at SMPN 1 Bandar Petalangan. The research adopts a qualitative approach with a case study research design. Data were collected from two English teachers at SMPN 1 Bandar Petalangan, selected through purposive sampling. The researcher collected data through observation and Interviews. The findings reveal that Teacher tends to use direct teacher talk strategies, such as providing clear instructions and explanations, along with offering praise to create a supportive learning environment. Conversely, it was also that predominantly employs indirect strategies, such as open-ended questions and interactive discussions, to encourage critical thinking and collaboration. Both approaches prove effective in different ways: Teacher provides clarity and structure, it was also found that fosters active participation and deeper engagement. This study highlights the importance of balanced communication strategies in creating a conducive learning environment and enhancing students' engagement in English language learning.
