Abstract

The aims of this research was to examine the effect of the Word Card Media on students' reading comprehension of recount texts in the ninth grade at SMPN 23 Pekanbaru. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with participants selected through purposive sampling. The research population consisted of ninth- grade students at SMPN 23 Pekanbaru and data were collected using a multiple- choice test. To analyze the data the researcher applied an independent samples t- test using SPSS version 25 and calculated Cohen’s d to assess the effect size. The results of the t-test indicated a significance value of 0.00 <0.05 threshold leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ). Additionally, the calculated effect size of 1.03 was classified as large. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Word Card Strategy significantly improved students' reading comprehension of recount texts in the ninth grade at SMPN 23 Pekanbaru.
