Abstract

ABSTRACT Rohana (2024) : The Correlation between Students' Complex Sentence Understanding and Reading Comprehension of Text Hortatory Exposition of the Eleventh Grade SMK Lil-Muqorrobien Al-Islami Riau This research is a correlational research. The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between students’ Complex Sentence Understanding and Reading Comprehension of Text Hortatory Exposition of the Eleventh Grade SMK Lil-Muqorrobien Al-Islami Riau. The research was conducted based on the preliminary study at SMK Lil-Muqorrobien Al-Islami Riau, which showed that reading problem that faced by the students. The preliminary study showed that some of students cannot understand complex sentence, some of students also cannot understand about the reading comprehension. Based on the problems, the researcher wanted to see students’ reading comprehension. Complex sentence and reading comprehension test were used to measure the correlation between students’ complex sentence understanding and their reading comprehension. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMK Lil-Muqorrobien Al-Islami Riau with total 22 students and the sample were 10 students taken using simple random sampling technique. The writer used Pearson product moment correlation through SPSS 25.0 to analyse the data. Based on the result of the analysis, it was found that sig.r obtained value is 0.000 lower than alpha value (0.05). It means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of correlation coefficient (r) is 0.596. In conclusion, there is a significant correlation between students’ complex sentence understanding and reading comprehension at SMK Lil-Muqorrobien Al-Islami Riau.
