Abstract

ABSTRACT Nurjihah (2023): Investigating the Use of Teacher Talk in Teaching English at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 1 Dumai This research aims to discover the types of teacher talk used by teachers in the classroom and to reveal why the teacher uses such type of teacher talk while teaching. Using a qualitative approach, the researcher observed the classroom interaction to analyze teacher talk in an English classroom. Besides the observation, the researcher also conducted a semi-structured interview with three English teachers and thirty students participating in the English class. The interview aims at clarifying what the teachers have done while teaching in the classroom. The result shows that teachers mostly use the types of Teachers Talk: providing clear instructions and explanations, asking questions, and giving feedback. One of the reasons is that using teacher talk in the classroom can help teachers streamline the learning process in English classes. Besides that, the teacher believed that it helps determine the teacher's success in transferring the knowledge to the students. Then, the teacher used teacher talk because the students have different intelligences, which makes the teacher need to explain more in the classroom. Furthermore, students also voice that using teacher talk helps them understand the lesson easily. It is due to the teacher's ability to deliver the material with clear instructions and explanations.
