Abstract

This research was a study of Murtadha Mutahhari's thoughts about Mut'ah marriage. In the beginning, Mut'ah marriage was started during the Jahiliyah period and it was still conducted by some Syi’ah people until today. This marriage experienced many pro and con of the legal implementation. One of the cons of this marriage was among the Sunni. But not only the Sunnis, some people from the Syi’ah also opposed this marriage, one of them was a Syi’ah figure named Murtadha Mutahhari, for him, this marriage had existed since the Jahiliyah era. Then, this marriage was forbidden during the caliphate of Umar bin Khattab. And Murtadha Murtahhari believed that this marriage would only produce a lot of negative impacts. It was a library research using descriptive qualitative approach. This research was focused on two problems: explanation about Mut'ah marriage itself, and Murtadha Motahhari's thoughts about Mut'ah marriage. A study of the available sources, both of he works from Murtadha Muthhari, commentators and writings that have studied his thoughts. The findings of this research showed that Mut'ah marriage was actually permitted at that time due to the condition that did not have facilities and ability to do permanent marriage and at that time Islamic syari’ah was not yet stable. Then, it was misinterpreted by people to just let go of lust. According to Murtadha Mutahhari, it was the same as destroying women's self-esteem where women actually have a high position in Islam
