Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the implementation of Think Pair Share (TPS) technique in teaching reading, to describe the implementation of Think Pair Share (TPS) technique in teaching speaking, and to describe the students‟ responses to the implementation of Think Pair Share (TPS) technique in teaching reading and speaking. This study employed a qualitative case study design. This study conducted in Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty at Language Development Center UIN Syekh Ali Hasan Ahmad Addary Padangsidimpuan. The participants of this study were the students and the lecturers in Tarbiyah and Teacher Training Faculty in academic year 2022/2023. The researcher chose two classes and two lecturers as participants purposively. There were 52 students from two classes. The data were gathered by observation, interview, and document analysis. The observation was done in two classes for six days. It was used to answer all the research questions. It was recorded by field note and some photographs. The interview was done with two lecturers and eight students from two classes. It was recorded by voice recording. It was used to know the students‟ response in implementing TPS in teaching reading and speaking. Document analysis was used to know how the lecturers implement Think Pair Share (TPS) in teaching reading and speaking. The findings of the study showed that (1) Think Pair Share (TPS) technique in teaching reading is appropriate to apply in the class because it can develop students‟ vocabularies and interest to learn reading by pair and group work. (2) Think Pair Share (TPS) technique in teaching speaking is appropriate to apply because it can make students feel motivated to speak, gives the students‟ time to practice the target language and to reflect them-selves. The students are very active, busy, and challenged to deliver their idea and practice comprehensively (3) Think Pair Share (TPS) is not appropriate to all of the students because some of them feel enjoyed learning by TPS, meanwhile some of them are not. They feel lazy and confused what to speak.
