Abstract

ABSTRACT Umi Lestari (2023) : English Magister Students’ Perception on the Use of Online Learning Platform during Covid-19 Pandemic at State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim This research aimed to investigate English magister students’ perceptions on the use of online learning platform (Whatsapp), to find out of the benefits of the use online learning platform (Whatsapp) and to find out the challenges of the use online learning platform (Whatsapp) of Magister English Department Students at State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Pekanbaru. The methodology of this research was mixed method. The participants of this research were twenty eight students with purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this research were online questionnaire and semi-structure interview. The findings showed that from 35 items on questionnaire. Agree had the highest number of the questionnaire statements. Strongly agree had 145 number of sample with percentage 17%, agree had 482 number of sample with percentage 55%, disagree had 195 number of sample with percentage 22% and strongly disagree had 52 number of sample with percentage 6%. The students perceived that Whatsapp was convenient, fun, pleasing and positive way as alternative media on virtual classes, assisted students in passing, exchanging, sharing and submitting various information, files and assignments easily, assisted students to still actively communicate and interact during discussing process on virtual classes, assisted students in practicing their language skills especially in writing and reading, made students’ learning experience more interesting, easily used, had complete featues to support teaching and learning process, and could be accessed anytime and anyplace. Meanwhile interview results showed that there were some benefits of using Whatsapp: in accessibility aspects, helpful features and saving time and money. However, there were some challenges of using Whatsapp: health and physical problems, learning process problems, technical problems and exploring language students’ skill problems. Based on the data obtained, the researcher concludes that magister students gave positive perceptions on the use online learning platform (Whatsapp).
