Abstract

ABSTRACT AnnaFitriani (2022): “AComparativeStudy onTheEffectofUsing crossword Puzzle and Word Square on The Student s’ Vocabulary Mastery” Themainpurpos eofthisresearchwasto findoutthe significantdifference of the improvement byusing crossword puzzle and word square onthestudents‟ vocabulary mastery in grade VIII at MTs S Darul Ikhlas Padangsidimpuan. The designof thisresearchwasaquasi -experimental study. Thisresearchusedpre-test and post -test. The data were analyzed by using Independent Sample T-test and PairedSample T-test. Theresul ts ofthisr esearch were; first, the significanteffect of using crossword puzzle on the stude nts‟ vocabulary mastery. The researcher foundthesignificant0.04<0.05.Second, theresearcheralsofoundthesignificant effect of using word square on thestudents‟ vocabulary mast ery. The res earcher found the signi ficant 0.03 < 0.05. Last, the researcher found the significant difference in vocabular y mastery bet ween students taught by using crossword puzzle and word square. The si gnificant value was 0.000 < 0.05. In conclusion, crossword puz zle is more effecti ve than word square to improve students‟ vocabularymastery.Themeangainscoreofcrosswordpuzzlewashigherthanthe meangainscoreof wordsquare(13.52>13.10).
