Abstract

ABSTRACT Suci Febriana (2022): An Exploration of Students’ Foreign Language Anxiety In Learning English During Online Learning at As-Shofa Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Indonesia, the formal learning process in Indonesia has suddenly switched from a face-to-face learning to online learning. In spite of the fact that the students’ foreign language anxiety (FLA) tended to be lower during online learning, some students had higher foreign language anxiety during online learning than in the face-to-face learning. Unfortunately, the study about junior high school students’ anxiety in learning English in online learning remains under-discussed, especially in Indonesia. Thus, this qualitative study was aimed to explore the students’ FLA in learning English during online learning at As-Shofa Islamic Junior High School Pekanbaru. 98 of the ninth grade students and four English teachers were involved in this study. Close-ended questionnaire, open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interviews were employed to explore the students’ FLA, the causes and the strategies that the students and the teachers did to cope with it. The results showed that the majority of the students had moderate level of FLA with different types of FLA. It was also found that some learner characteristics such as competitiveness, perfectionism, inability to comprehend and etc caused the FLA during online learning. The online language class characteristics such as the absence of physical meeting and unconducive home situation also triggered some students’ FLA. Furthermore, some psychologycal strategies were done by the students and some pedagogical strategies were done by the teachers to reduce the students’ FLA. The findings of this investigation provide the insights and recommendations for related authorities as well as establishing chances for the further research on the students’ FLA during online learning.
