Abstract

Body image is the perception, belief, thought, feeling and behavior about the individual self including perceptions related to the individual's body and attitude. One of the factors that influence body image is personality, including self-esteem. The main purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-esteem and body image in young women who are active Instagram users in Pekanbaru. This study involved 236 adolescents in Pekanbaru who were selected using the accidental sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this study is a modified MBRS-AQ scale by Cash and Pruzinsky (2002) with a reliability coefficient of 0.914 and a self-esteem scale based on the theory of Tafarodi and Swann (2001) with a reliability coefficient of 0.885. Based on the results of data analysis, it shows that the self-esteem and body image of young women who are active Instagram users in Pekanbaru are in the high category. The results of the product moment correlation analysis obtained a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.566 and p value = 0.000 (Sig. <0.01) which means that there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and body image in young women who are active Instagram users in Pekanbaru. The result of the effective contribution of self-esteem to body image is 0.320, which means that self-esteem gives a value of 32% to the formation of body image in young women who are active Instagram users in Pekanbaru.
