Abstract

ABSTRACT Fitri Zulyanis (2021): The Effect of Using Jigsaw Technique on Students’ Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text at Grade Ninth of Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Agam Regency Reading is one of important skills in English language. It is important to be taught to the students because it can help them understand all written texts and they can use it in their daily life. Reading is a receptive skill which through it we can receive information. Through reading, people can increase their knowledge and experience and enlarge their main thinking. This research aims to find out if there is significant effect in reading understanding among students of grade IX at Junior High School of Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Agam Regency who were taught using jigsaw technique and those who were not during academic year 2020/2021. This research was categorized into quasi experimental research by using non-equivalent control group design. The non-equivalent control design involved random assigning from the whole group for the treatment, not random assigning from each group. The research divided the group to be the experimental class and the control class, pre-test was given to both groups and the jigsaw technique was given only the experimental group. The last, post-test was given to assess the difference between the groups (experimental group and the control group). This research was conducted in April until July 2021 at Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Agam Regency. The research involved 53 students consisted of two groups namely Class IX A as the experimental group and Class IX B as the control group. The data were obtained by using pre-test that was given to both groups before the treatment and post-test was given after the treatment. The pretest data and post-test data of both groups were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The research results show that there is significant effect in reading comprehension between students who were taught using jigsaw technique and students who were taught with text book based technique. The significance value counted was 0.055 bigger than 0.05 (sig value = 0,55 > 0,05). Therefore, the hypothesis of this research was accepted. In other words, there is significant effect in students‟ reading comprehension who were taught using jigsaw technique as the learning technique in grade IX of Junior High School Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Agam Regency.
