Abstract

Silage is a technology that aims to store feed without damaging the feed material itself. The purpose of this study was to determine the interaction between various types of additives and vegetable waste of cabbage (Brassica olaracea) and mustard greens (Brassica juncea L.) on the physical of silage itself. This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, State Islamic University Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau in July 2020 - September 2020, in the form of completely random design factorial trial. I Factor is an additive (A) which consists of three levels, such as 100% cabbage waste, 50% cabbage waste + 50% mustard waste and 100% mustard waste. The second factor is an additive (B) which consists of three levels, such as sugarcane juice, sap water and pineapple peel juice. The parameters for observing physical properties consisted of pH, aroma, color, and texture and the presence of fungi. The data from the analysis of variance were further tested with the DMRT test at the 5% level. The results showed that the interaction of various additives and substrate composition was seen from the color, texture, and presence of fungi. Pineapple peel additives can maintain the physical quality of silage in texture, aroma, presence of mold, and pH. The substrate composition of 100% mustard waste can maintain the physical quality of silage in color, texture, aroma, and the presence of mold. The best treatment combination in this study was pineapple peel juice additive with a substrate composition of 100% mustard waste compared to other treatment combinations. Keywords: Additives, composition, vegetable waste, silage
