Abstract

This research was conducted based on observations in the tenth grade of SMKN2 Pekanbaru. Some students still have problems in learning English, especially in improving their English speaking. This can be seen from the way they learn English. In this study, the author uses the time token arends model to help students improve their speaking skills. This research aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference between students' speaking ability by using the time token arends model and without it. This research was experimental research, which is a quasi-experimental design by a non-equivalent (pre-test posttest) control group technique. The population of this research was the tenth grade majoring in DPIB of SMKN 2 Pekanbaru. The total population was 112 students, while for sample selection the writer used the purposive sampling technique. There were 43 students as a sample of this research. In collecting the data, the writer used a spoken test to know students’ speaking abilities. The experimental class was treated by using the time token arends model, while the control class was using the conventional ways. The pre-test was given to the two groups before giving the treatment. The result of the pre-test showed the mean score of the experimental class was 59,50 and the control class was 58,78. After giving the treatment, a posttest was given. The result of the post-test showed the mean score of the experimental class was 80.30 and the control class was 74.87. In addition, the result of the independent sample t-test showed that Sig. (2-tailed) 0.063>0.05 and the t-count value is 1.910< t-table 2.020, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis (Ho) was accepted, besides the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that there were no significant differences between students' speaking ability by using the time token arends model and without that on tenth-grade students at SMKN 2 Pekanbaru.
