Abstract

ABSTRACT Santry Maulia Ferdana (2021): The Correlation between Students’ Past Tense Mastery and Their Ability in Translating Narrative Text of the 4th Semester at English Education Department of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau The purpose of this research is to examine whether there is any significant correlation between students‟ past tense mastery and their ability in translating narrative text of the 4th semester at English Education Department of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. There were 28 students as samples by using quota sampling technique. This research approach was quantitative method and the technique used in this research was a correlation technique. In collecting the data, the researcher distributed the test to the respondents to determine the students‟ past tense mastery, which consist of 29 items multiple choices and used translation test to measure students‟ ability in translating narrative text. The researcher used Simple linear regression through SPSS 22.0 to analyse the data. The result of this research showed that sig. r obtained value is 0.005 lower than alpha value (0.05). it means that null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The value of r obtained is 0.513 > r table 0.374. In conclusion, there is a correlation between students‟ past tense mastery and their ability in translating narrative text of the 4th semester at English Education Department of State University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau.
