Abstract

ABSTRACT Putri Ayu Annora , ( 2021 ) : The Correlation between Student Participation in Learning and their Speaking Ability at the Second Grade of Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru . The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a correlation between students ' participation in learning and their speaking ability at the second grade students of Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru . From 328 students in total population consisting of nine classes , the researcher took 49 students as samples using simple random sampling . In collecting data , researchers distributed questionnaires to respondents to assess student participation in learning . In addition , in assessing students ' speaking ability , this study used an oral test . In analyzing the data , the questionnaire was scored using a Likert scale rating and the speaking test was measured using the ESL Composition profile . The Pearson Product Moment technique is used to measure the correlation between two variables using SPSS.19 . The result of this research shows that the students ' participation in learning is 66.92 % while the students ' speaking ability is 69.95 . Regarding the correlation between student's participation in learning and their speaking ability , the researcher found that the correlation coefficient in this study was 0.483 , which means that there is a moderate relationship between the two variables . Based on the results of the study , it can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between student participation in learning and their speaking ability at the second grade students of Senior high school 12 Pekanbaru .
