Abstract

ABSTRACT Irfaini, (2020): Indonesian EFL rural teachers’ Challenges in implementing scientific approach at rural school: a case study at SMAN 2 Rangsang. This study discusses the challenges faced by rural EFL teachers in implementing a scientific approach: a case study at SMAN 2 Rangsang. This study aims to determine what challenges are faced by EFL Indonesian teachers in implementing a scientific approach at rural schools. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects of this study were two English teachers, the headmaster, and vice of the curriculum. Interviews and documents were used as data collection instruments. Then the data were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the results of the data, the authors found that lack of infrastructure, lack of learning resources in schools, language barriers, parents' mindsets, student abilities, students’ mindset, inadequacy teachers, lack of teacher’s understanding in making lesson plan, lack of application about scientific methods in learning activities, lack of teachers’ understanding about authentic assessment, the lack of learning resources for English subject become challenges for EFL rural teachers in applying the scientific approach in teaching English activities. The causes of these challenges are manifold and the causes are interrelated with one another. Based on this study, Indonesian EFL rural teachers are expected to be able to improve their competence to implement a scientific approach during teaching and learning English activities after knowing the causes of these challenges.
