Abstract

Based on the preliminary research of the eighth grade students at MTsN Andalan Pekanbaru, the writer found the problem in learning English especially in reading comprehension. The students still got problems in reading text. Based on some of the students did not know what they were reading. When the teacher gave them a textbook, they could not understand the text well. It occurured because the students had difficult vocabularies in the text and they also could not find the main idea. The purpose of this research were to find out whether or not there was significant of using showdown strategy on students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at MTsN Andalan Pekanbaru. This research was experimental research. The research design was a quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students at MTsN Andalan pekanbaru in 2013/2014. It consisted of eight classes; the number of population was 260 students. The sample of this research was 60 students (VIII.1 was 30 students and VIII.2 was 30 students). They were VIII.1 as experiment class and VIII.2 as control class. The technique of collecting data used by the researcher was multiple choice test. The technique of analyzing data was an independent sample t-test by using SPSS 17.0 program. Based on the research result, the researcher found that there was a significant effect of using showdown strategy on students’ reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at MTsN Andalan pekanbaru, which t obtained = 4.438, and df 58. Because df 58 was not found from t table, so the researcher took df 60. By comparing t obtained with t table from df 60, it showed that t-obtained = 4.438 that was higher than t-table either at 5% = 2.00 nor 1% = 2.65. It means that 2.00<4.438> 2.65. It was identified Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected.
