Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that most of the students’ reading comprehension was still less and could not achieve the minimum standard of score. This problem was caused by some factors. For example, some of the students had difficulties in getting ideas from the reading text and had difficulties in analyzing the reading text. So, the writer was interested in carrying out the research about this problem. The research was conducted at SMP N 1 Salo. The subject of the research was the second year students of SMP N 1 Salo and the object of the research was the effect of using The Ask To Think–Tel Why Strategy towards students’ reading comprehension in Descriptive text. The design of the research was Quasi-Experimentaldesign. The population of this research was all of the second year students. The total number of population was 135 students. Because the number of population was large, the writer used random sampling by taking two classes as sample; VIII 1 consisted of 34 students as experimental class and VIII 2 consisted of 34 students as control class, so the total number of the sample was 68 students. The instrument of this study was by using a test. To analyze the data, the writer used SPSS 20 Software and t-test formula. After analyzing the data, the writer found that there was a significant effect of using The Ask To Think–Tel Why Strategytowards readingcomprehension indescriptive text of the second year students at SMP N 1 Salo, where tobtained shows 2,80, T0.05 shows 2,00 and T0.01 shows 2.65. So, T 0.05 <To>T 0.01 or 2,00<2,80>2.65. Thus, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis(Ha) is accepted.
