Abstract

This research was conducted at second year of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. In the school, English subject has been taught by the professional teachers of English. They have already used many techniques to promote students’ speaking. Ideally, the students did not have any big problem about speaking. But in the fact, some of them were still unable to speak well. They used grammar incorrectly when speaking English. They had lack of vocabulary to produce language orally. Besides, they were unable to understand what the speaker said and to pronounce English words well. The objectivesof the research were to find out the students’ speaking ability by using Four Corner strategy and without using Four Corner strategy, and to find out the significant effect of using Four Corner strategy toward students’ speaking ability. This research was an experimental research that used quasi experimental design with nonequivalent control group. The research used two classes as the sample of the research. XI IPA 4 was as an experimental class, XI IPA 5 was as a control class. The total number of each class was 32 students. Both of the classes were given pre – test and posttest. The treatment was given to experimental classes about 6 meetings. In collectng the data, the researcher used oral presentation test. The score of students’ test was assessed by two rates. It was analyzed by using T – Test in SPSS 16.0 version. The result of analyzing data was that Hawas accepted and Howas rejected. In the words, there was a significant effect of using Four Corner strategy toward students’ speaking ability at the second year of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. The researcher concluded that teaching speaking by using Four Corner strategy was effective to be used for improving the students’ speaking ability
