Abstract

This research is entitled “The Effect of Using Collaborative Writing Approach toward Students’ Writing Ability on Narrative Paragraphs at State Junior High School 2 Kampar”. This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students such as some of students were not able to write sentences in English correctly, use the correct tenses in their sentences, express their ideas into a written language, use vocabularies in writing English, did not know parts of speech in English and have good interest in learning to write English. The research had 3 formulations of the problems; is there significant difference of the students’ writing ability on narrative paragraphs before being taught by using collaborative writing approach and conventional teaching at the third year students of State Junior High School 2 Kampar, is there significant difference of the students’ writing ability on narrative paragraphs after being taught by using collaborative writing approach and conventional teaching at the third year students of State Junior High School 2 Kampar, and whether there is or no significant effect of the students’ writing ability on narrative paragraphs by using collaborative writing approach at the third year students at State Junior High School 2 Kampar. The object of the research was to find out the effect of using collaborative writing approach toward writing ability on narrative paragraphs at the third year students of State Junior High School 2 Kampar. The research design was a quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the third year students at State Junior High School 2 Kampar in 2013/2014. It consisted of three classes; the number of population was 65 students. The sample of this research was 43 students (IX.1 was 21 students and IX.2 was 22 students). IX.1 was a control class and IX.2 as an experimental class. The technique of collecting data used by the writer was written test. The technique of analyzing data was an independent sample t-test and paired-sample t-test and they were analyzed by using SPSS 19.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there was a significant effect of using collaborative writing approach toward writing ability on narrative paragraphs at the third year students of State Junior High School 2 Kampar. It was considered from t-obtained = 8.22 that was higher than t-table either at 5% = 2.08 nor 1% = 2.83. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. From the research finding, it showed that there was a significant effect of using collaborative writing approach toward writing ability on narrative paragraphs at the third year students at State Junior High School 2 Kampar.
