Abstract

ABSTRACT Ajeng Kinanti, (2020): Using Story Completion Technique to Improve Students’ Speaking Ability at SMAN 1 Tanah Merah. This research was conducted based on the problems faced by the students in learning English especially in speaking ability. The researcher found that the students still had difficulties to speak fluently in front of many peoples. And then, they were also afraid and not confident to speak English in front of the class. So, the researcher was interested in carrying out the research about these problems. In this case, the researcher provided Story Completion Technique to help students to improve their speaking ability. This researcher would to find out is there any significant effect of using Story Completion Technique to improve students’ speaking ability at SMAN 1 Tanah Merah. And the research design was an experimental research. The population was the Tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Tanah Merah, Indragiri Hilir Regency in academic year 2019/2020. They consisted of six classes. The total of population was 164. The sample classes were 44 taken from two classes (22 students in each class). The technique of collecting data used pre-test and post-test by orally, the researcher recorded their performance and analyzed them. The technique of analyzing data was an independent sample t-test and it was eased by using SPSS 17.0 program. Finally, based on the research findings, the researcher found that 2.02<2.107>2.72. So, it can be analyzed that to is higher than T-table in either 5% or 1%. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. And the effect size was calculated by using eta square formula, the researcher found that 0.09 is a Moderate effect. The researcher concluded that there is a significant effect between students’ speaking ability taught by using Story Completion Technique.
