Abstract

Vocational High School 1 Dumai is one of the schools that used School Based Curriculum as a guidance in teaching and learning process. After doing preliminary observation, some of the students of the second year still had low ability in their listening. The researcher interpreted that they had low ability in listening ability, it was indicated that they got low score in their listening task, lack of vocabulary, not able to identify what the speaker means, not able to identify the material in listening, not able to understand and respond the material in listening, and are not able to catch the point clearly. Thus, the researcher was interested in conducting the research entitled “The Effect of Using Paraphrase Passport Strategy toward Listening Ability of the Second Year Students at Vocational High School 1 Dumai”. The type of the research was quasi-experimental research which the researcher could not create new participant groups for this experiment. The main focus of this research was to find out a significant effect of using Paraphrase Passport Strategy toward Listening Ability of the Second Year Students at Vocational High School 1 Dumai. The subject of this research was the second year students of Vocational High School 1 Dumai. In this research, the researcher took two classes; experimental and control classes are Accounting 1 and Accounting 2. There were 72 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used test. The test used was listening test. In analyzing the data, the researcher used independent sample TTest operated by SPSS 16. Finally, the research found that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. Besides, it could be proved from the mean score of students’ listening ability of post-test that at experimental class was higher (63.89) than at control class (54.44). Furthermore, the category of students’ improvement in listening ability at the experimental class was middle, while in control class was low. In conclusion, there was a significance effect of using Paraphrase Passport strategy toward listening ability of the second year students at Vocational High School 1 Dumai.
