Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary research at SMAN 3 Pekanbaru, it was found that some of the students of the second grade still had low motivation in their speaking English. This problem was caused by some factors. For example some of the students seldom to speak English, some of the students feel difficult to express their ideas in speaking English, and some of the students do not have confidence to speak English. Thus, the writer interested in conducting the research about this problem. The research was administered at SMAN 3 Pekanbaru. The subject of this research was the second grade students of SMAN 3 Pekanbaru, and the object was the effect of using Pair Taping method towards motivation in learning speaking. This research was an experimental research and the design of this research was quasi experimental design which used non equivalent control group. The writer used two classes as sample. That consists of 33 students for each class. The writer gave pre-questionnaire to experiment and control class. Then, the writer gave treatment by using pair taping method for experimental class only, and by using conventional strategy for control class. Finally, the writer gave post-questionnaire to both of class in order to know the effectiveness of Pair Taping method that applied by the writer. The technique of collecting data was the questionnaire. The technique of analyzing data, the writer adopted independent sample t-test formula by using software SPSS v. 16. The result of the data analysis was 4.939. This result was compared with ttable by considering df ( Degree of freedom) 33 (N-2), because tcalculation > ttable 2.00<4.939>2.65, It means null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The writer concluded that there was significant effect of using Pair Taping method towards motivation in learning speaking of the second grade students at SMAN 3 Pekanbaru.
