Abstract

This research was conducted based on some problems were faced by students in learning English especially in Writing Descriptive Paragraph. The problems were; Some of the students get difficulties to express their ideas in writing Descriptive Paragraph, some of the students are difficult to develop ideas the topic given, and some of the students have difficulties in arranging the sentences in Descriptive Paragraph. The research was administered at SMPN 1 Bangkinang Barat. The subject of the research was the second year students of SMPN 1 Bangkinang Barat, and the object of this research was to find out the effect of using hero quest strategy toward writing ability in descriptive paragraph at the second year students of SMPN 1 Bangkinang Barat. The design of this research was quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was all of the second year students of SMPN 1 Bangkinang Barat. The total number of population was 60 students. The number of sample consisted of two classes; VIII A that consisted of 30 students as experimental group, and VIII B that consisted of 30 students as a control group. The technique of data analysis used chi- square and t-test formula in order to find out the difference score of post-test experimenta and control group by using SPSS 16.0 version. Based on the data analysis, researchers found there was a significant difference of post-test score frequency distribution of the second year student ability in writing descriptive paragraph by using and without using hero quest strategy of SMPN 1 Bangkinang Barat. it can be seen from the result of T-test calculating to was 8.111, while from the df= 58, because the df = 58 was not found from the “t” table, so the researcher took df=60, the level of significance of 5% is 2.00, and the level significance of 1 % is 2.65. It can be seen that 2.00 < 8.111 > 2.65
