Abstract

This research is entitled “The Effect of Using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) Strategy on the Students’ Reading Motivation at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru”. The research had 3 formulations of the problems; how students’ reading motivation taught by using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and rap (R5) strategy at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru is, how students’ reading motivation taught without using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) strategy at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru is, and whether there is or no significant difference of reading motivation between the students who are taught and those who are not taught by using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) strategy of the second year students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. The object of the research was to find out whether there is any significant difference of reading motivation between the students who are taught by using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) strategy and those who are not taught by using R5 strategy of the second year students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. In this research, the research design was a quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the second year students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru in 2013/2014 academic year. It consisted of seven classes; 4 classes for science department and 3 classes for social department. The target population was the second year students of science department. The sample of this research was 64 students (XI IPA 1 was 31 students and XI IPA 3 was 33 students). They were XI IPA 3 as a control class and XI IPA 1 as an experimental class. The techniques of collecting data used by the writer were observation, questionnaire, and interview. The technique of analyzing data was an independent sample t-test and it was eased by using SPSS 17.0 program. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that there is a significant difference of reading motivation between the students who are taught by using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) strategy and those who are not taught by using R5 strategy of the second year students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru. It was considered from t-obtained = 7.357 that was higher than t-table either at 5% = 2.00 or 1% = 2.65. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. From the research finding, it showed that there is a significant difference of reading motivation between the students who are taught by using Read and Relax, Reflect and Respond, and Rap (R5) strategy and those who are not taught by using R5 strategy of the second year students at State Senior High School 2 Pekanbaru.
