Abstract

Based on writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the students of second grade at Junior High School 20 Pekanbaru were not motivated in speaking English. This problem needed the appropriate solution. In this case, the English teacher was expected to apply the techniques that were interesting and appropriate, one of the techniques is Strip Story. This research was done to find out the influence and how influential this technique toward motivation of students of second grade at Junior High School 20 Pekanbaru in speaking English. The design of this research was a Quasi-experimental design, where, there were two classes as sample; VIII.5 class consisted of 40 students as an experimental class, and VIII.4 class consisted of 40 students as a control class. Experimental class was given the treatment and control class was not, while both of classes were given pre questionnaire and post questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the writer used T-test formula by using SPSS version 16. The data analysis result indicated that there was a significant difference between motivation of students in speaking English after using Strip Story and motivation of students in speaking English before using Strip Story. It was known from the value of t-obtained that was higher than t-table at significance level of 5% and 1%, so alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Based on the result, the writer concludes that teaching speaking by using Strip Story technique brings good impact on increasing the students’ motivation and the learning process.
