Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of using Save the Last Word for Me strategy on students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery The design of this research was an experimental research. The research subject was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Pasir Penyu. The object was the effect of using the strategy on the students’ reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery. The research participants were divided into 2 classes; namely an experimental group (24 students )and a control group (24 students). The sample used was cluster random sampling technique. A set of pre- and post-test instruments were used to obtain data, and the data were analyzed by using T-tests for independent and paired samples through SPSS version 20.0. The findings showed that there was an improvement of the students’ reading comprehension of the experimental group. The mean score of the pre-test was 64.58 and the post-test score was 76.67. The hypothesis-testing could also be seen from the result of the p-value (sig. (2-tailed ) )that was 0.000. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The percentage of the improvement that could be seen from eta-square result was 79%. In addition, an improvement on vocabulary mastery was found in the experimental group. It could be seen from the comparison of the mean scores. The pre-test score was 67.08 and the post-test was 79.12. The hypothesis-testing could also be seen from the result of the sig. (2-tailed)was 0.000. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted (84% ).
