Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether there was a significant influence of using guided reading and summarizing procedure (GRASP ) strategy on students’ reading and writing ability at SMAN 2 Tambang. It was carried out by using a quasiexperimental research design. The research subject was tenth-grade students at the school. Two classes were involved, namely an experimental and a control group. In the process of data collection, tests and observations were used. In analyzing the collected data, statistical analyses included t-tests for independent and paired samples and effect size formula were used. The result of this research shows that 1. There is a significant effect of implementing treatment of GRASP strategy toward students’ reading comprehension for the experimental group. The T-test result was 23.290, its df was 31, comparing the number of significance. If probability >0.05 null hypothesis (H0 ) is rejected. If probability <0.05, alternative hypothesis (Ha ) was accepted. Because the significance was 0.000 < 0.05, thus, Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. 2. There is a significant effect on implementing treatment of GRASP strategy toward students’ writing ability for experimental class. The t-test result was 16.693, it was df 31, by comparing the number of significance. Because the significance was 0.000 < 0.05, thus, Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. In conclusion, the use of GRASP could be implemented in teaching and learning of reading and writing at the school.
