Abstract

Based on KTSP, the purpose of learning English is in order that the students are able to develop the competence of communicating in the form of oral and written to achieve the level of functional literacy. Islamic Senior High School of Islamic Boarding School of Technology Riau is one of the schools which use the curriculum in the learning process. After observation, the authors found several problems, such as some students had a negative perception of their ability, less motivation in writing English, low self-esteem in writing English. The purpose of this research is to know the students’ self-esteem, their self-efficacy, their ability to write the Descriptive Text and to know whether there is a significant relationship between self-esteem and self-efficacy on the ability to write Descriptive Text of grade 10 students of the Islamic Senior High School of Islamic Boarding School of Technology Riau. This research is a Correlation Research. The author uses a questionnaire to find students’ self-esteem and students' self-efficacy and uses the test to determine the students’ writing ability. In analyzing the data, the authors use Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient with the help of SPSS 20.00. The result of the research is ro = 0.426, higher than r table at 5% level (0.344). From these results, it can be concluded that the Null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. And in conclusion, there is a significant positive relationship between student self-esteem and self-confidence in the ability to write Descriptive Text of grade 10 students of MA Islamic Senior High School of Islamic Boarding School of Technology Riau
