Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to investigate whether the use of the Semantic Mapping strategy provides an increased difference to students' vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Kuantan Singingi District. Based on previous observations at SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Kuantan Singingi Regency, it was found that students had lack vocabulary. They did not use their predictions in discovering and understanding the meaning of the text. Later, they did not find the equations of words and the opposite words of certain words. As a result, it affected their reading comprehension. Some students were not able to get the main idea, detailed information, and the value of the text. The design of this research is Experimental Research. The subject of this research is the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The object is the influence of the use of the Semantic Mapping Strategy to improve students' vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Singingi, Kuantan Singingi Regency. The respondents of this research are 2 classes; Experiment group (25 students ) and comparison group (25 students). A total of 50 students is taken by using Cluster Random Sampling. The test is used to obtain the data which were analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test by using SPSS 20.0. The results of this study indicated that there is an increase in students’ mastery of vocabulary in the experimental class. This is seen from the comparison of the average value. The initial test score was 57.28 and the final test score is 67.84. The hypothesis experiment is also seen from the result of sig. (2-tailed)which is 0.000. Therefore, null hypotheses are not accepted and alternative hypotheses are accepted. The percentage of improvement seen from the effect size is 67.5%. Then, there was an increase in students' reading comprehension in the experimental class. This is seen from the comparison of the average value. The initial test score which was 56.64 and the final test score which is 67.84. And hypothesis experiment is also seen from the result of sig. (2-tailed)which is 0.000. Therefore, null hypotheses are not accepted and alternative hypotheses are accepted. The percentage improvement seen from the effect size is 67.1%.
